OPIC Embarks on a Communication Campaign to Sensitize Citizens on Obligations to Councils

Within the framework of its sensitization drive to create awareness about its missions and existence, the Office of the Public Independent Conciliator has launched a communication campaign to sensitize citizens and user of council services as a whole on their obligations towards the Council. The objective of the communication campaign to run over some media organs in Buea and Limbe is to educate citizens on the importance of the role of mayors in local governance and on their responsibilities as inhabitants within their municipality.

Speaking during a preparative meeting with media organs, the Public Independent Conciliator, Mme Telelen Dorothy Motaze said unlike the sensitization campaign conducted throughout 2024 which emphasized on the missions of OPIC, this year’s initiative will focus primarily on educating users both Cameroonians and foreigners residing in the region about their obligations and how to collaborate effectively with their local councils to foster development. She emphasized that this approach will promote good governance and enhance community participation in municipal affairs.

Some key messages of the campaign include the role of mayors in fostering local governance, importance of citizen’s respect for mayors, general obligations of citizens towards the council and the responsibilities of citizens towards the council in the provision of key services.

The campaign to run from the 1st of June to August 31st 2025   shall be carried out in two phases. While the first phase will essentially focus on the responsibilities of citizens towards the council, the second phase shall lay emphasis on the role of mayors in fostering local governance. It is important to mention that this approach chosen by Mme the Public Independent Conciliator was lauded by the media houses who saw in it the effort to engage citizens to the development of their municipality.
