OPIC joins Stakeholders to Discuss Decentralization process in the North West and South-West Regions

The Public Independent Conciliator, Mme Telelen Dorothy Atabong spouse Motaze and some staff of the institution were among other stakeholders who took part in a workshop organized by the British High Commission in Cameroon in partnership with the African Leadership Centre on the Decentralization process in the North-West and South-West Regions.

The purpose of the workshop held on Thursday, 16 March 2023 was to bring policy makers, civil society organizations and donor agencies together to share experiences, take stock of decentralization measures implemented in the two-English speaking regions within the framework of Decentralization as well as propose recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of regional assemblies. The workshop also aimed at strengthening partnerships among all stakeholders in efforts to develop a more inclusive and participatory governance system and responsive institutions.

Opening the seminar, the Representative of the  Minister of Decentralization and Local Development H.E Georges Elanga Obam while commending  the British Government for the support to the decentralization process in Cameroon, pointed out that  his ministerial department  applauds the organization of the workshop  as it brought together stakeholders from the academic, government, civil society and donor spheres to reflect on the successes, opportunities and challenges arising from decentralization process ongoing in the North-West and South-West Regions.

Mindful of the fact the institutional framework needs improvements to enable the Regions effectively play their role, the Representative of the Minister urged the participants to actively contribute so that from the discussions and recommendations of the workshop, pertinent proposals will be made to improve the functioning of the Regional Assemblies of the Regions under review.

The various presentations on; the Effectiveness of Regional Assemblies in the North-West and South West Region,  Prerogative and Reserved powers of the Regional Assemblies of the  North-West and South-West Regions, Decentralization and Gender Equality in the North-West and South West Regions and the Role of the Traditional Authority in the Decentralization Process in the North-West and South-West Regions, revealed perceptions on strengths and weaknesses of the process in the said regions including actions that can be undertaken to improve it.

Rounding the workshop, the Chargé d’Affaires, British High Commission to the Republic of Cameroon, H. E Nigel Holmes said the perceptions shared through the various presentations whether wrong or right can be changed through constant communication, commitment and action by the major stakeholders beginning from the State. This could be achieved through the combine efforts of the Cameroon Government and donors, he noted
