OPIC, Kumba City Council and Community Stakeholders Chart Ways to Improve Services Delivery

Stakeholders of the Kumba City Council have met under the banner of the Office of the Public Independent Conciliator, to chart ways on improving services delivery by the Kumba City. The Townhall meeting which took place on February 19, 2026 at the Kumba City Hall provided a platform for the Kumba City Council and Community Stakeholders to identify issues of pertinent concerns as well as the commitment to solving or providing satisfactory address. Organized under the theme: “Office of the Public Independent Conciliator: Consolidating Collaboration Between the Kumba City Council and Community Stakeholders for Sustained Services Delivery”, the meeting aimed at accompanying the Kumba City Council in its drive to foster development and provide services that resonate with the aspirations of the people.

While opening the Townhall meeting, Mme Telelen Dorothy Motaze, the Public Independent Conciliator (PIC), underscored the importance of collaboration between the City Council and its community stakeholders. She emphasized that sustainable development cannot be unilateral but requires the active participation of citizens. Responsive and sustainable development she noted, “cannot be achieved in isolation”. There is the need for a “complementary relationship where the Council meets its citizens” she highlighted.  The PIC, while saluting the City Council and the other sub-divisional Councils for efforts made to provide basic local services to the population, called on the citizens and users of the council services to fulfil their obligations towards the Councils; especially in domains of hygiene and sanitation, compliance to taxes payments, acquisition civil status documents and building permit.

During the exchange session which followed the two presentations by staff of OPIC, access to pipe-born water, refuse disposal and the construction of farm-to-market roads were the main concerns expressed by the participants and fuelled a dominant part of the discussions.  The City Mayor of Kumba, Mr. Greg Mewanu reassured participants that the City Council in collaboration with the sub-divisional councils is working to provide lasting solutions to the worries expressed.

The Townhall meeting, which was attended by the Senior Divisional Officer for Meme, the Bishop of the Dioceses of Kumba, the Mayors of Kumba I, II and III, Deputy Mayors, Councillors and the Management Staff of the Kumba City Council, Traditional Rulers, Religious Authorities, members of youth associations, market vendors, bike riders, taxi drivers, farmers, economic operators, and persons with disabilities, concluded on a note of satisfaction expressed by Madam the PIC following the rich the exchanges. Participants were then treated to lunch.
